Spanish Books about the Olympics

Of course, I can't share books about the Olympics without including some that are in Spanish!

Finding children's books in Spanish about the Olympics is definitely a challenge. However, I did find a few that might be fun for your family. Normally, I try to avoid books that were originally written in Spanish, but there are so few books that I had to make an exception this time. However, I tried to choose books that were translated by native speakers, as I find them to be far better quality.

Please note that I haven't read any of these, except for the original English version of the Magic Tree House book. Therefore, I've shared the book descriptions directly from Amazon for you to read.

Books for Younger Children

Once there, the three friends will meet Corebus, the charioteer of Princess Cinisca, and Perla, his mare. Perla is sick and cannot compete in the race, but Felipe will help her recover.

Children's Books About the Olympics

Children's Books About the Olympic Games

Before the Olympics begin, it's always a great idea to read books that explore the history and the aspects of the Games. Do you know the history of the Olympics? Where did they start? Who participated? What is the meaning behind the Olympic flame? Who was Pierre de Coubertin and why is he significant? Which events have come and gone?

Learn all this and more with these remarkable books for children. You can ask for them at your local library, or click on the affiliate links below to purchase your copy from Amazon.

Books on the History of the Olympics

The Olympics Ancient to Modern is a fascinating look at the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, from the first events in Ancient Greece right the way up to London 2012 and Sochi 2014. It focusses on when and where each Games has been held, and some key stats, such as how much it cost, how many athletes competed, and how many spectators came to watch.

The book explains how all the Games - Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, and Paralympics - came into being, and how the Olympic Games were revived in Paris at the end of the 19th century. It compares the ancient and modern Games, looking at the sports and athletes involved then and now, and at how the modern Games are continually evolving.

It also looks at key moments in the Games' history, and at some of the tragedies and controversies that have rocked it - from doping scandals, boycotts and cheating to the Berlin Olympics of 1936, and the Munich Massacre.

The book celebrates the achievements of star Olympians, and gives the lowdown on the most popular and exciting Olympic sports, from cycling and rowing to skiing and wheelchair basketball.

Back in 775 BC, athletes from all over Ancient Greece came together to compete in various games. The contests were held every four years and winning athletes brought honor and respect to their homelands.

The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, with over two hundred athletes from fourteen countries. Today, nearly three thousand years after the first Games, the Summer Olympics attract one hundred thousand top athletes from over two hundred countries. Billions of fans around the world cheer on their national teams to bring back the gold.

Ages 8 - 10

And, of course, this is the perfect event to turn into a learning opportunity. Practice worldschooling! Introduce your children to 11 countries, the history of the Olympics, famous athletes and more with the new Winter Games Unit from Multicultural Kid Blogs. You may enjoy it just as much as they do.

Things have been quiet here on MommyMaestra the last few weeks because I was working on this packet. Yes, I am a contributor. And I was delighted to do so. It was so much fun to work on this unit and create pages that are engaging and educational. Lots of research and creativity going on here.

You may remember me contributing to a similar packet for the Summer Olympics a couple of years ago. In fact, you can still download the free sample pages that feature the country of Mexico and it's participation in the Olympics.

For parents and educators raising global citizens, this downloadable no-prep packet introduces children to 11 countries around the world through the Olympics theme. The Winter Games Unit Activity Pack contains 100 pages of learning materials, including:

• a history of the Ancient and Modern Olympics
• a brief history of the Olympic flame
• a brief description of all the sports played in the 2018 Winter Games
• world mapping activity
• an introduction to this year’s host city and country
• introductions to the Olympics top ten nations with the most medals; includes country facts, geography, brief histories, landmarks, wildlife, music, famous people, Olympics facts, a kid-friendly recipe, and recommended reading
• reading passages about six famous winter Olympians
• additional worksheets that allow students to show what they’ve learned, such as flag matching, word search, matching, fill in the blank, multiple choice, and trivia.

An answer key is included. These fun activities are designed for children ages 8 – 12, or 3rd through 6th grade.

You can purchase and download this packet from MKB's TpT store or on their website.

Enjoy the PyeongChang Olympics!

Summer Games: Gymnastics Adventure Dora Giveaway

We are so excited! Tonight, the Summer Olympics officially begin with their Opening Ceremonies. Even though women's soccer has already started, tonight is the one moment that truly symbolizes the spirit of the Games because the citizens and athletes of all the countries will be gathered together in one place to celebrate this world event and to proudly represent their countries.

Our family will be gathered together watching and cheering. My kids have been preparing for the Summer Games for a few weeks now with the new Summer Games Unit by Multicultural Kid Blogs. I had the privilege of working on it and can honestly say it is one of the best downloads available for families and students is (in my opinion). It comes with 100+ pages of educational fun, such as...
  • a history of the Ancient and Modern Games
  • a brief description of all the sports played in the 2016 Summer Games
  • world mapping activity
  • an introduction to this year’s host city and country
  • introductions to the top ten nations with the most medals; includes country facts, geography, brief histories, landmarks, wildlife, music, famous people, trivia, a kid-friendly recipe, and recommended reading
  • reading passages about seven famous medaled athletes from around the world
  • additional worksheets that allow students to show what they’ve learned, such as flag matching, word search, matching, fill in the blank, multiple choice, and trivia.
  • answer keys
  • your own medal tracker!

If you're looking for other resources, don't forget that I have many posts here on MommyMaestra sharing resources for exploring Ancient Greece, how to learn the Greek alphabet, and much, much more. And you can also find loads of ideas on my Olympics Activities & Crafts board on Pinterest...

Anyway, as you know (if you follow MommyMaestra on Facebook) we are huge fans of gymnast Laurie Hernandez from New Jersey. Why? Because a) she's a Latina - Puerto Rican descent to be exact, b) she's homeschooled! and c) we love her charm, her cheerful attitude, and her creative spirit. Her first round of events will be this Sunday. We hope you'll watch with us and cheer on our American team.

So you can imagine my delight the other day when I was walking around Target with my kids and I spied this awesome Gymnastics Adventure Dora doll in the clearance rack. She was the only one, just begging me to take her home. I couldn't help but be reminded of Laurie and so I snatched her up! She's perfect. And look! She even says more than 30 phrases in English AND Spanish!

Since my daughter isn't too into dolls (unless they are the furry and feathery kind), I decided that this Dora/Laurie needs the love of a special girl.

SO! To celebrate the Summer Games and Laurie's success in making the Olympic team, I'm giving away this doll to one MommyMaestra reader!

Children's Books about Mexico

I'm delighted to have the opportunity to kick off August with a post related to the Summer Games. You know they'll be starting this Friday, right? Well, Multicultural Kid Blogs has been running a series since the beginning of July that is dedicated to exploring world cultures in honor of the Olympics. Bloggers from around the world get a different country and theme to highlight. I had Mexico. You might remember my free download that I shared earlier this summer. It's a sample of the country section you'll find in our Summer Games Unit.

Today, the theme is books. And since I've got Mexico, I'll be sharing a list of Latino kids' literature that features Mexico. If you're doing a unit study of this country during the upcoming school year or simply as a learning opportunity during the Olympics, I think you'll enjoy these books.

by Tony Johnston

The country of Mexico has long been a popular travel destination. But there's much more to enjoy and appreciate than just sunshine and warm temperatures when exploring this region with its ancient history and proud traditions. Enjoy an A-Z tour of our neighbor to the south in P is for Piñata: A Mexico Alphabet. Young readers can visit the tomb of a Mayan king, experience the life of the vaquero (Mexican cowboy), attend the world-famous Ballet Folklórico de Mèxico, and sample the everyday treat that was once known as the "food of the gods." From folk art to famous people to the original "hot dog," the treasures of Mexico are revealed in P is for Piñata.

by Laurie Krebs

Swim in turquoise seas, admire grey whales and monarch butterflies, trek to native villages and sing and dance to the music of Mariachi bands. Along the way, you can learn Spanish words and phrases and discover Mexican culture. Enjoy your journey!

An alphabetical exploration of the people, geography, animals, plants, history, and culture of Mexico.

by Tomie dePaola

Hace mucho tiempo—a long time ago—there lived a beautiful young woman named Adelita. So begins the age-old tale of a kindhearted young woman, her jealous stepmother, two hateful stepsisters, and a young man in search of a wife. The young man, Javier, falls madly in love with beautiful Adelita, but she disappears from his fiesta at midnight, leaving him with only one clue to her hidden identity: a beautiful rebozo—shawl. With the rebozo in place of a glass slipper, this favorite fairy tale takes a delightful twist. Tomie dePaola's exquisite paintings, filled with the folk art of Mexico, make this a Cinderella story like no other. Read my review.

by Mary C. Turck

This multicultural activity book celebrates the myriad cultures of Mexico and Central America and their shared ancient Aztec and Mayan roots. For each country, a brief introduction is provided that includes illustrated maps and facts about population and geography. More than 40 projects and three dramatic play scripts explore the interconnectedness of these countries and help children experience aspects of daily life throughout the region including school, work, home, art and poetry, food and agriculture, and special holidays. Activities include embroidering Mayan designs, painting in the Salvadoran style, creating an ofrenda for the Day of the Dead, crafting political puppets, cooking chocobananas, and making piñatas. Engaging sidebars throughout the book provide children with an introduction to the Spanish language. Also included are tips for teachers who want to use the activities in the classroom, complete with more specific age ranges and suggested modifications.

by  Duncan Tonatiuh

From first-time Mexican author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh comes the story of two cousins, one in America and one in Mexico, and how their daily lives are different yet similar. Charlie takes the subway to school; Carlitos rides his bike. Charlie plays in fallen leaves; Carlitos plays among the local cacti. Dear Primo covers the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of two very different childhoods, while also emphasizing how alike Charlie and Carlitos are at heart. Spanish words are scattered among the English text, providing a wonderful way to introduce the language and culture of Mexico to young children.

by Susan Milord

Discusses the history, language, religion, customs, and daily life of Mexico, using a variety of activities to reinforce the information.
