Nacho Books

One of the things that I see coming up a LOT these days from parents raising bilingual children is a request for materials that teach children how to read in Spanish. Especially from parents who had children in immersion PreK and are now homeschooling them for Kindergarten.

A few years ago, I reviewed the Nacho (lectura) books from Susaeta. They have been SO POPULAR! So many parents have said that these were the books they used to learn to read.

But the biggest hangup was that they are published in Latin America. Fortunately, there is one place here in the States where you can order them: Cultural Bytes

The Giveaway

But I'm very happy to announce that our friends at Cultural Bytes are offering a set of these awesome books for one lucky family.

This set includes (all shown above):
1- Nacho Lectura Inicial De Lectura (estados unidos)
1- Leo y Escribo 1
1- El Gran Nacho

Spanish Alphabet Books for PreK & Kindergarten

So many families raising young bilingual children are searching for resources right now to help their preschoolers and kindergartners learn to read in Spanish.

We are lucky to have Spanglish Schoolhouse participating in this year's Back-to-School Fiesta! They have generously offered their Spanish Alphabet Books Bundle. And what I love about it is that parents don't have to be native speakers to help their children learn!

Why? Because this set comes with QR codes . And although the student resources are 100% Spanish, the teacher instruction pages are in English.

This DIGITAL DOWNLOAD bundle is fantastic for practicing letter identification, syllable counting, and beginning sounds in Spanish (or sonidos iniciales).

Every consonant book has all five vowels represented. (The exception is c & g, because there are two versions for those letters: hard and soft.)

Each letter comes with five resources:

Flipbook with QR Code

A printable book children can color, cut, staple, and read to practice beginning sounds in the context of a predictable sentence. These have QR codes, so children can scan and read along with the flipbook using any QR code reader on a phone, tablet, or computer.

Video

This is a full-color version of the above flipbook being read. NOTE: The QR code connects children to files in Google Drive. You will want to be sure your district does not block Google Drive files.

Trace & Match

Trace the word and match it to the correct picture.

Word Puzzle & Syllable Count

Children use the word bank to match the word to the correct picture, then count and circle the correct number of syllables.

Word & Picture Puzzles

Use these to introduce the vocabulary for each letter, as matching puzzles, or to play memory or Go Fish.

What a FABULOUS resource, no?!?

Teacher's Discovery Enhanced Reader Series

Teacher's Discovery Enhanced Reader Series

The following is a sponsored book post in collaboration with Teacher's Discovery. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One of the most popular questions I get from readers is: Where can I find new readers for my kids or students?

Slowly I've started collecting quite a few series for those of you with young beginning readers in elementary grades. But I've been missing readers designed for older students. So when Teacher's Discovery reached out to me and asked if I would take a look and share their new Enhanced Reader Series, I agreed to take a look and see if they are a good fit.

They totally are.

I received three of the books in their Level 1 series: ¡Sí, yo puedo!, El intercambio, and Los novios¡Sí, yo puedo! follows the story of Mario and his struggle to get good grades. The book introduces his friends - Carmen, Eric, and Cristina - a cast of characters that also appear in the other two books. Three of them have been friends since kindergarten.

Los novios is the story of Eric and Carmen's romance. I know it sounds a little sappy, but based on my own kids, I would bet that most teenagers will eat it up! And so the language learning is made a little easier. Ha!

And finally, El intercambio tells the story of Carmen's opportunity to travel in Mexico and learn about the history and culture of the area.

Teacher's Discovery Enhanced Reader Series

Aside from the subject matter, what makes these books best geared for older students is the approach, design, and use of technology (see more below). Also, at the end of each book, there is a comprehensive glossary with all the words used in the book. They've made it super easy for the reader to understand the material.

Teacher's Discovery Enhanced Reader Series

Story Vignettes

The chapters are perfect in length and content. I think the longest one I've seen is five pages. The pages are not text-heavy, either. Each chapter is a short story - a moment, really, in the lives of the characters and the scenes are focused on helping the reader build their vocabulary and reinforce concepts. There is just enough repetition of words to help the reader master their understanding. And at the end of each chapter, there are 10 questions for reading comprehension and critical thinking. Everything is in Spanish.

Teacher's Discovery Enhanced Reader Series

QR codes

This is probably the most amazing part of these books. Most of the chapters contain a QR code* (or several) that introduce characters and/or give you, the reader, a little more background information. Some are dialogue scenes straight from the chapter. For example, in the first chapter of ¡Sí, yo puedo!, there are QR codes that lead to videos about each character. I discovered that Mario enjoys painting, playing the piano and chess.

*You can use any (free) QR code reader app on your phone. You can also use Snapchat to scan it! What?!? I know.

Teacher's Discovery Enhanced Reader Series

Full-Chapter Audio

There is also a QR code at the end of each chapter that takes you to a complete audio recording of that chapter. This is great for learning proper pronunciation, as well as to practice listening to Spanish in real-time. I love that the publisher uses voice actors to read the story aloud, theater-style.

Overall, I believe that these are just fantastic teaching tools for the Spanish classroom. They are fun, engaging, and really facilitate learning. They can be used as independent reading, homework assignments, lessons for substitute teachers, class read alouds, and so much more.

You can find them on the Teacher's Discovery website here.

Great Spanish Songs for Your Classroom!

The following is a guest post by Risas y Sonrisas founder, Leticia Smith.

What do you want to achieve with music in your classroom? Some songs are designed to teach specific vocabulary lessons while others can teach cultural lessons or simply be fun to sing. To effectively use music to accelerate learning, it is important to pair the song with movement, pictures, or lyrics so students understand what they’re singing. After students learn the song, continue to activate the vocabulary with visual aids, games, acting, writing, and drawing. Here are four options for great Spanish songs for your classroom!
¡Qué disfruten!

Sing-Alongs for Younger Kids

Sing-along songs are simple and easy to learn. Some of the songs have the same tune in English and Spanish, which helps students learn to hear and repeat Spanish words. These songs are best used with pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms but can also work with elementary-level students. They tend to tell fun and silly stories rather than teaching specific vocabulary. Here are a few YouTube channels with colorful and cute bouncing-ball videos.

Cri-Cri: El Grillito Cantor (Cri-Cri, the Little Singing Cricket)

Cri-Cri’s songs are full of fun storytelling, cute characters, and a variety of musical styles. They work with a variety of elementary ages, but are best used with students who already have some Spanish vocabulary. Cri-Cri has been popular with children in Mexico for generations, so your students can gain some cultural knowledge along with the music! Their YouTube channel is full of songs with which children can sing along.

Miss Rosi

Miss Rosi is an educator and singer based in Peru. Her gentle, folksy songs for children are easy to sing and tend to have a moral, natural, or cultural lesson. Again, these songs are presented only in Spanish. Her YouTube channel videos include lyrics.

Risas y Sonrisas

If you’re looking for songs to teach vocabulary by theme, Risas y Sonrisas Spanish for Kids is your best bet! The fun and catchy songs present vocabulary with fun visuals and the option of using American Sign Language to make the connection with its meaning. Then, the vocabulary learned through the songs is reinforced with a complete set of immersion-based printed and digital games and activities. The program also includes songs that tell fun stories or teach about Hispanic culture. The curriculum contains over 40 original songs, many of which are available on their YouTube channel

Leticia Smith is originally from Mexico City and has lived in Austin, TX since 1986. She received a BBA with a Minor in Marketing from Texas State University and an Accelerated Learning certificate from the University of Houston. Not knowing then the impact it was going to have in her future, she worked four consecutive years in the university's Spanish department where she acquired invaluable experience teaching college students twice a week and offering tutoring services. Later, when she had the opportunity to teach children, she discovered that her true vocation was to teach and inspire others to put joy into learning. Her years of experience as a Spanish instructor teaching children in all grades at elementary schools eventually led to the development of her award-winning program, Risas y Sonrisas.

Purposeful Talk Anchor Charts in English & Spanish

A little over a week ago, I had someone write and ask me if I had any Purposeful Talk anchor charts available. I didn't, so I tried to find her some online. But I couldn't find any with the Spanish version. So after doing a bit of research, I made these.

The struggle I had, though, came when I was putting the Spanish version together because after talking with several teacher friends and asking in a group, I realized that different districts use different terminology for "Purposeful Talk." Some were more laid back with "Una charla intencionada," while others used a more formal "Conversaciones académicas."

In the end, I went middle of the road with "Hablar con intención," but if you are a teacher who uses one of the other phrases (or something completely different), just drop me an email and I'll be happy to change the titles for you to reflect the language you use in your classroom.

I also had to create my own acronym for the Spanish version since S.L.A.N.T. didn't translate the same. :)

You can find these new posters/anchor charts in my TpT store.

And while we are on the subject, I want to remind you that if there is a particular printable that you'd like to see created or are looking to use with your students, but you can't find what you are looking for, don't hesitate to email me. I'm always open to suggestions and happy to create something just for you.

Happy Monday!

Free Download: Christmas Describing with Colors in Spanish

Just in time for Christmas, MommyMaestra sponsor Spanish for You! has created a new free Spanish download that helps your young Spanish learner learn their Christmas vocabulary. This mini lesson focuses on colors and descriptions so your student will not just increase their vocabulary but learn word placement, too. Adjectives are arranged differently in Spanish, so this is great practice!

Today's five-page download includes an audio file to help your young student learn the proper pronunciation, which is a blessing to homeschool parents who don't know Spanish themselves.

Remember! Spanish for You!'s program is geared for middle schoolers and is the perfect choice for homeschoolers and afterschoolers alike because their concepts are carefully divided up into manageable bundles that are available for immediate download from their website.

Linguacious for Spanish Learners

Linguacious for Spanish Learners

This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Linguacious and MommyMaestra. All opinions are my own.

Most good Spanish learning curricula contain a lot of hands-on learning. If you flip through almost any program lesson plan and you'll see arts, crafts, music, TPR...and games. Especially games. That's because learning happens faster and easier when we are having fun. Teachers have used games like hopscotch, dominos, Uno, Go Fish, and many, many others to teach children important concepts for decades.

In the Internet TESL Journal, there's an article by Chen, I-Jung, in which the author states that games are beneficial in language learning because "games...
  • are learner-centered.
  • promote communicative competence.
  • create a meaningful context for language use.
  • increase learning motivation.
  • reduce learning anxiety.
  • integrate various linguistic skills.
  • encourage the creative and spontaneous use of language.
  • construct a cooperative learning environment.
  • foster participatory attitudes of the students."

If your child is learning Spanish at home or in the classroom, there's no reason why you can't use games outside of their curriculum to supplement their language learning. That's why I love it when I learn about products independent of a curriculum that may be used to boost your child's language learning skills.

Linguacious for Spanish Learners

So let me introduce you to Linguacious, a family-owned language learning company started by a language learning expert raising his son to be trilingual. The dad is Brazilian, the mom is Ukrainian, and their son is being raised speaking Portuguese, Russian, and English through the OPOL (One Parent One Language) approach. I was delighted to be contacted by this education company and asked to share their products.

This set of game-based vocabulary flashcards is unlike any flashcard set you've ever seen before. To use the cards, it is best if you download the Linguacious app. It's basically a QR code reader, but one developed by Linguacious specifically for use with Linguacious products. The result is that it scans the Linguacious QR codes much faster than other QR readers, has no ads whatsoever, and is very easy for even small kids to use; simply point at the QR code and it pronounces the word. It also has a flashlight feature, which makes it possible for kids to scan the cards even in the dark!

You'll need it to work with the cards. On one side you'll find real-world images and a QR code (no written words), and on the other side, you'll see the written word and another QR code (no images). When you scan the code, you'll hear the word pronounced in the target language.

Linguacious for Spanish Learners

It's pretty amazing because you can use each card to boost ALL FOUR language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This is a precious tool for any language learner or educator.

And you know what this audio feature means, right? That's correct! Parents, you don't have to be fluent in the target language to play games with your child! Woohoo! (But watch out because if you mispronounce the word, your child is going to notice anyway!)

The other cool thing is that these flashcards can be used by one child (solitaire) or as a group (class) activity. The Linguacious website has a page dedicated to all the different games you can play with their deck of cards. (But I bet your children or students can come up with a few more!)

I believe I counted 51 languages in which the cards are available. Wow. That's some serious language learning going on. And the cards are available in several themes, such as...
  1. Animals
  2. Around the Home
  3. Food & Drinks
  4. and Verbs

The really fantastic part is that these cards may be used with children of ANY age. Are you working on raising a bilingual toddler? Boost his vocabulary with the Pointing Fingers game. Got a middle schooler learning Spanish? Help him with his pronunciation with the Word Whiz game. Is your high schooler taking Spanish for the first time? Help her practice her conversational Spanish by playing Vocabulary Train! Seriously, who would have guessed you could play so many games with a simple deck of flashcards?

AND I was impressed to discover that all Linguacious® products come with a complimentary 2-year technical audio warranty!

In addition to the flashcards, Linguacious also has poster sets in a similar format using the QR reader app. Their Spanish poster, as you can see above, follows the Gomez & Gomez dual language education model, with the Spanish words colored in red and the English translation colored in blue. What is great is that the English translations are in a much smaller font size than the Spanish words, so that students do not use the English translation as a crutch, but only to check the meaning. The images are quite self-explanatory and clear on their own, but the small English translation may appeal to certain schools and programs. I think this would be a great addition to the Spanish-learning classroom and could be used as a language center activity while the cards could be used as a group-learning game to reinforce vocabulary.

To order your own set of Linguacious cards or posters, you can visit their site or purchase directly from Amazon (aff link).

English & Spanish Crossword Puzzles for Kids

Are you stocking up yet on books, crafts, and activities for summer? I'm always looking for materials and ideas to use to keep my kids busy learning and having fun during downtime, but especially during the hot summer months. If you're the same way, then I want to share with you a new book that I received recently! Bilingual activity and puzzle books are just one way to keep kids learning a second language during the summer.

Bilingual Crossword Puzzle Book for Kids

English & Spanish Crossword Puzzles for Kids (aff link) contains 80 puzzles that will boost your child's vocabulary in English or Spanish (or both!). It's perfect for ELL and Spanish learners alike.

The crossword puzzles cover 40 different topics, such as Family/Familia, Hobbies/Aficiones, Emotions/Emociones, Professions/Profesiones, Time/Tiempo, and many more.

I love the fact that when you open the book, the puzzles with the same topic are on opposite pages, so you can do the English on the left and then complete the Spanish on the right. This makes the book a perfect fit for parents raising bilingual children!

Of course, all of the answers may be found in the back of the book.

While I think this would be a fun way to pass the time during the summer at home, on vacation, or on long car rides (road trips?), it's also a great resource for homeschoolers and bilingual educators. All of the pages are reproducible for teachers, parents, and librarians.

The book is published by Woo! Jr. Kids Activities. If you haven't visited their website, you should! It's got tons of great crafts and printables. :)

3 Books of Spanish Poetry for Children

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? Over the years, I've shared a few poetry resources with you, such as 10 Latino Poets Your Children Should Know and 7 Books to Help Celebrate National Poetry Month. But I was thinking about how often I get emails asking for Spanish poems or places to find Spanish poems that children can memorize and recite in school. Here are the books that I recommend to everyone!

by Mariana Llanos

A beautifully written and illustrated collection of Spanish poetry for children. The poems are about topics to which children can relate - the seasons, the ocean, ice cream cones, reading, animals, clouds, and many others. And it features whimsical black-and-white illustrations by seven artists. A definite must-have for all school and family libraries.

by F. Isabel Campoy

One of my favorite authors, F. Isabel Campoy has created a lovely book of poetry for young readers. There are 107 poems for you to choose from and they are all about topics that children love, such as family, animals, imagination, the world around us, and more.

by Alma Flor Ada

The other half of my favorite writing duo for children, Alma Flor Ada has put together a huge collection of poems for children to enjoy. Teachers will love how this is organized by curriculum themes such as the parts of the body, numbers, vowels, food, nature, etc. This anthology is perfect for students and teachers looking for short, medium, or long poems to memorize and recite.
