Spare Parts Movie and Twitter Party!

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with SprintLatino and Latina Mom Bloggers. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

I absolutely love inspirational movies that are made by and/or about Latinos. In fact, I have a whole collection of them on DVD that I break out and watch on a pretty regular basis. Some my kids have already seen, while others I'm saving to show them when they are a little older to help them be proud of their culture and to inspire them to make a difference. So when I saw the trailer below for the new movie Spare Parts, I let out a little squeee! The movie is based on the true story of four Latino students and their teacher on their quest for a shot at a NASA-sponsored, national robotics contest. With no experience, used parts, and $800, the group goes up against MIT, the top robotics team in the country.

As the mother of a daughter who is obsessed with robotics and wants to be a bioengineer, I'm passionate about getting our kids excited about careers in STEM fields. Latinos only account for 5.8% of the engineering workforce, and young Latinas are virtually nonexistent. Most Latino college students aren't pursuing a degree in any of the STEM fields. But with the U.S. Hispanic poverty rate at 24%, a career in one of these fields has the ability to lift families out of poverty since STEM graduates could potentially earn a six-figure salary upon graduation. I'm really hopeful that this film will motivate our kids to discover and explore science, technology, engineering and math.

Spare Parts opens in theaters across the country this coming Friday, January 16th.
