Spanish Mini Books by Lectura para niños {GIVEAWAY}

Today's giveaway comes from one of my favorite Spanish immersion resources, Lectura para niños. If you've followed MommyMaestra for a while, then you may remember many of the free downloads that they've shared on the site. Their focus is on creating educational printables for students in PreK through 2nd grade, mostly materials for learning to read in Spanish, like this set of mini books.

They are aligned with the same letter of the week and site words as the Maravillas Reading series. You can read more about this series on the McGraw Hill website, or order books directly from Amazon using this search...

Leah, the owner, says...

"I created these little books to work on during small groups. Students will reinforce the beginning sounds, syllables & automaticity with their sight words taught throughout the week. They will also practice segmenting words into syllables as well as blend syllables to form words.

To use them, print enough books for one group. Then laminate and bind them together.

One teacher or assistant will go through this book with the students at the pacing of the students in your group. My more advanced group will be able to get through more pages than the others. I will also be using this during my intervention time with my students who need extra time.

My small group reading happens for 45 minutes. My students are required to switch between myself and two assistants. We rotate groups every 15 minutes. One of my assistants will work on this with my kiddos.

My materials are in no way associated with or endorsed by McGraw Hill - Maravillas reading series. I have created these small books to complement the program and our small reading groups.

How to play the board games:

1. Practice reading around the board, tracking and following the letters and words. We do this a lot before we start playing the game. These game boards really help students with tracking and staying together. The colors help, as well. If the student loses their place, the colors help when I say, "We are on the word yo. The color is red," etc.

2. Roll the die (In the beginning, I use a die that only has 1, 2, & 3 on the die because there aren't that many spaces. We roll the die, move that many spaces. The student needs to say the letter or word or they have to return to their prior space. The first person to make it to the end of the board wins.

The Giveaway

Lectura para niños has graciously offered a free set of these mini books to 3 MommyMaestra readers!

Free Download: Middle & Ending Syllables in Spanish

I just love all the amazing resources that our sponsor Lectura para niños shares with MommyMaestra readers. Leah is a teacher herself, so she knows exactly the types of materials that educators need to help their students learn how to read and spell in Spanish. And this month's freebie is no exception!
Leah says:

This book is completely revised! This book is meant to specifically work on middle and ending syllables that the students are working on for the week. I have the kids repeat the word, then segment the words into syllables. Once they segment, I have them fill in the missing syllable which correlates to the letter of the week! I hope your readers enjoy!
If you love these sample pages and would like to get the whole book, you can find it here.

Free Download: Beginning Sounds Review in Spanish

It's time for another great download from our sponsor, Lectura para niños! Today's download is a sample of worksheets reviewing beginning sounds in Spanish.
Leah says...

Here is your February’s freebie! This is a sampling of a bigger book. With this book, each new section of the book has several practice pages from the “NEW” letters in each theme. The kids practice writing the begging sound from each picture, then they have to decide which picture starts with the beginning sound. There are enough pages to practice in class as well as send home for homework. I like this book because the students will have had enough practice in class which will allow them to do the homework on their own without help.

Free Homework Book for Spanish Readers: Phonics Center

A large number of MommyMaestra readers are parents who are raising bilingual children or have a child in a dual immersion program. Does this sound like you? If so, then you are no doubt giant fans of our sponsor Lectura para niños, whose materials are an invaluable resource for parents of Spanish readers. Today's free download is no exception.

Leah says...

This freebie matches my beginning sounds phonics center, but is in black and white. I send these pages home for homework when we are practicing deciphering beginning sounds.  I copy off the letters we are working on and we practice in class and they can color them, then they cut them apart and take them home.  Since the students have already practiced them in COLOR, they know how to play these games.  These are a great way to get the parents involved in their students' learning.

Here is the Full Phonics Center & Homework versions in color and black-and-white:

Free Homework Book for Spanish Readers: Segmentación

We are SO grateful for our wonderful sponsor, Lectura para niños, and all the fantastic FREE downloads that they share with MommyMaestra readers every month. Today's download is a great resource for parents of Spanish readers.

Leah says...

Parents always ask me how they can help their child at home. I started sending these home with my kiddos a few years ago, but I have recently updated this file. Usually at the beginning of the year, I start with sending the “segmenting syllables” pages only. Around November, I start sending the pages that segment words into syllables and sounds. Segmenting words into sounds is a developmental skill. Having the students at least say the sounds for each word while looking at it is a start. Soon, the students will be able to segment a 4 sound word without looking and then progress to a 6 sound word. I wouldn’t expect students to segment words with blends or diphthongs until they get to 1st grade. I do have many of my students who can do this by the end of the year, but not all are quite ready for it.

I hope your readers enjoy this!

You can get the entire unit here: Spanish Homework: 006: TAREA Segmentación por sílabas y sonidos

Free Download for Spanish Readers: Word Wall

MommyMaestra's Back-to-School Fiesta! continues with August's freebie from our wonderful sponsor, Lectura para niños. It can actually be used three different ways: as a word wall, vocabulary cards, or picture dictionary.

This post contains affiliate links.

Word Wall Spanish Vocabulary Cards

Leah says...

This freebie is part of a bigger Word Wall! Originally, I had used this just as a word wall and picture dictionary. I would put these words up under the alphabet letters we have from our curriculum. Recently, I decided to print additional sets for my classroom and put them on rings. The students can take the words for the letter of the week we are practicing and practice with their elbow partners during center time. They LOVE them! They take ownership of them being able to cover the picture on the cards and reading the words with their partners! So much fun! I hope your readers enjoy as much as my students have!

There is another freebie for the letter M on my TPT page as well.

Classroom Tools to Pair with this Download

You may enjoy using these cards with the following tools in your home or school classroom.

If you simply don't have the wall space or would prefer to things away when your lessons are over, this Tabletop Desktop Pocket Chart works great!

Free Booklet for Vowel Recognition in Spanish

June's freebie from our sponsor, Lectura para niños is a fun booklet to strengthen your child's ability to identify vowels and sight words in Spanish.
Leah says...

Here is a “portion” of a bigger item that I have on TPT that you can get here. You will get 8 of 23 pages from this bundle.

These little books are a fun and interactive way to learn how to read and reinforce the vowels in Spanish.

This book provides opportunities to:
  • reinforce the beginning sounds of each vowel
  • correspond pictures to the correct vowel sound
  • segment words into syllables
  • learn to read sight words with automaticity

Here is a link to access all of the other little readers I have created for this series.

I use these little books weekly to increase knowledge of letter naming, sounds, blending and segmenting words. You do NOT have to use the MARAVILLAS reading series to use these little books. One pair will work on this mini reader during their small reading group. They will review these books daily before being introduced to a new letter/word in the following week. Each week gets progressively harder and reinforces the learning from the week before.

Free Activity to Build Number Recognition Fluency in Spanish

This post contains affiliate links.

May's freebie from our sponsor, Lectura para niños is a simple set of worksheets to strengthen your child's number recognition fluency in Spanish.

Leah says:
Here is a freebie that I use for number recognition fluency.

The pages are divided into groups of numbers that the students need to practice on. Each day, I will pull the students into small groups for five minutes. Each group will practice the number fluency section that they are working on. The students progress through these pages quickly with just five minutes each day!
Number recognition is one skill set that is taught preschool and students should be completely fluent in both letter and number recognition when they enter kindergarten so that they do not fall behind.

Free Spanish Game to Build Letter Naming Fluency

This post contains affiliate links.

April's freebie from our sponsor, Lectura para niños is "Fluidez de letras," a simple game to strengthen your child's letter naming fluency in Spanish.

Leah says that in kindergarten, there is a fluency benchmark that the students must meet for the IDEL - Dibels assessment. To help her students develop this skill, Lectura para niños has created an easy game for kids.

Letter recognition is a critical pre-literacy skill that all children need in order to begin reading. Unfortunately, many Latino children begin kindergaren without this skill, causing them to fall behind their peers. Learning to recognize letters is a skill that should begin (and mastered) in preschool. If your child is not enrolled in a preschool program, that's okay, so long as you are actively working with them at home. Resources like this game from Lectura para niños are invaluable tools for professional educators and parents.

There is a wonderful little series of abecedarios, or alphabet books in Spanish (aff link) by Lectorum that I recently discovered. I think it would be a great little supplement for this activity. The ones shown above are just an example of some of the titles included in the series.

But you can also check out Mi abecedario by Maria Parrish, and ¡Marimba! Animales from A to Z by Pat Mora.

Free Download: Letter G Unit to Accompany Maravillas Sapnish Reading Program

This post uses affiliate links.

Learning to read is the most fun whenever the materials are colorful and engaging and the activities are clever and effective. That is why I love this month's free download from our sponsor Lectura para niños! The download is a set of engaging worksheets to accompany McGraw-Hill's Lectura Maravillas reading program that Leah uses with her students.

(PSST! Parents, you can find more affordable Maravillas textbooks here on Amazon [aff link].)

Leah says:

This week focuses on the letter G and new sight words: quién and al. It also reviews all previous words taught from the other little reader books.

Each week these books get progressively harder while adding a new letter/syllable of the week as well as 2 new sight words.

The 1st and 2nd pages introduce picture vocabulary that begin with the sound /g/. The 2nd page also provides a game board to use as you wish. In my class I teach them how to play so when I send this home for homework, they can play with their family to make reading a little bit more fun. In class, we mainly just read around the board. This helps the child focus on the word. I like the colors with this game because children with visual focusing disorders have a hard time tracking. The colors help with this.

On the 3rd page there is fluency practice to review a) lowercase letters taught to date, b) uppercase letters taught to date, c) sight words taught to date, d) syllables of the week

With my INTENSIVE students, I make sure if there is an error made, we go back two letters and keep reviewing until we have the letter correct.

With my at level and above level students, we read this page for speed and automaticity.

On the 4th page the students have to

a) Listen to the teacher say 2 words that begin with the /g/ sound and find a picture that begins with this sound.

b) Listen to the teacher say 2 words with the /g/ sound in the middle of the word, then find a picture that has the /g/ sound in the middle of the word.

On the 5th page, the students have to

a) Look at the picture at the beginning of the column, then circle the WORD that has the same BEGINNING sound.

b) Look at the picture at the beginning of the column, then circle the WORD that has the same MIDDLE sound.

On the 6th page, the students have to read words and draw a line to the corresponding pictures.

On the 7th page, the students have to practice segmenting words while looking at the sounds as well as with their eyes closed!

On the 8th page, the students have to read the sentence and draw a line to the picture that corresponds with the sentence.

This link will take you to all of the little reader books that I have created to go along with Maravillas reading series. You do not need this series in order to use these books. These books all reinforce phonemic awareness and phonics in the Spanish homeschool and or classroom.

Free Download: Spanish Spelling List

A couple of weeks ago, a MommyMaestra reader wrote and asked me about Spanish spelling lists. I asked our wonderful sponsor, Lectura para niños, if they had any available, and they quickly created one from their Maravillas reading series.

Leah says:

Each week, we send these little books home after we have reviewed for the week. We ask the students to be able to recognize these words weekly. We don’t expect them to spell them on their own until spring break. Every week the little book includes a game board of all the words taught until this point. First, we read all sight words and letters on the page all the way through, then we play in groups of four, moving our way through the game board. This is not only fun, but it reinforces these sight words on our list.

Some of the things we do with our kids to practice sight words:
  • make the words using play dough
  • write the words with salt in a tray
  • segment the words into sounds while tracking the letters in print
  • segment the words into sounds without looking
  • make the words using magnet letters
  • paint the words
  • type the words with old keyboards
  • rainbow write the words
The last page of this document has a list of all of the links to my small group readers that will study and review these words each week.

PowerPoints Game for Beginning Spanish Readers {PRINTABLE}

This post uses affiliate links.

MommyMaestra sponsors are some of the best people on the planet. Each month, they provide free downloads for MommyMaestra readers. Lectura para niños simply has amazing materials for parents and educators who are teaching Spanish-speaking children how to read in Spanish. And today's free printable game is no different.

Leah says:
I’m in the process of updating all of my PowerPoints with new Clip art!
I love these new PowerPoints. They are great for immediate feedback, which is what the students need. I usually play these PowerPoints as a whole class and then put them on the student stations for the students to use independently. Later I print them and put Hot Dots stickers (aff) on them. The Hot Dots stickers are hot and cold for correct/incorrect answers. Use the Hot Dots pen to read the stickers. The pen will either “yes” or “no, try again.” I love that the students can play this game in so many ways. This PowerPoint is great for reinforcing beginning Spanish Reading skills.

Free Download: Emergent Spanish Reader Activity Booklet

Activity Booklet for Emergent Spanish Readers

This month's free download from our sponsor Lectura para niños is a wonderfully engaging little book to accompany McGraw-Hill's Lectura Maravillas reading program that Leah uses with her students. Here's what she has to say about it...

"This is a little book that I printed back to back and bound on the side. I have created two at this time, but hopefully by the time your readers download this there will be others that will continue to assist beginning Spanish readers. These little books are sequential and correlate with the Maravillas reading series. Eventually I will backtrack and start from the very beginning of this reading series to have a complete set of readers for my students. Since I have started using these with my students, the kids have really picked up on reading their letter names, sounds, and sight words.

How do I use this book?
I use the approach of “I do, we do, you do approach.”
1) First I read a line for the students, modeling what the expectation is.
2) Next, we read the line together making sure students are correctly tracking the letters/words
3) Last, I allow the students to read the lines on their own.

At the beginning/middle of the week we do mostly I do, we do. Towards the end of the week I do mostly we do, you do.

I cannot tell you how much this direct instruction reader has helped my students with the concepts they need to know!

I hope your readers enjoy!

Here is the TPT link of where you can find more readers like this one for future reference. There will be books added weekly with more sight words added. I will post all books at 50% OFF for the first week added.

Here is my FB page where I will announce the new book that is out!"

Free Download: Student Desk Plates in English & Spanish

September's free download from our sponsor, Lectura para niños is a set of student desk plates. Leah has made them available in English and Spanish. Aren't they super cute?!? I'm cranking up my laminator in the morning to get mine ready for my kids. Remember, your children don't have to be in a traditional school to use these desk plates. They are great for homeschoolers and families, too. And they can be used in other ways, too. If you are looking for more great resources like this one, be sure to click the link above to visit Lectura para niños' TpT shop.

What are desk plates?

Desk plates are visual references that students can use to help them remember important concepts. Most often, classrooms use desk "name" plates for students in elementary school. When a student goes to their desk day after day, they see their name and learn what it looks like and how it is spelled.

But desk plates can also be used to teach other information, such as numbers, colors, shapes, the alphabet, days of the week, months, the five senses, etc. There's no limit to what you can make a desk plate about.

How to use desk plates for students

You can purchase desk plates or print your own. Laminated plates work best as they are sturdier and can survive the wear and tear of desk use. Most teachers use clear tape to attach desk plates to their students' desks. This way, children can easily look at it when they are working on activities that are related to the subject matter on the plate.

Other desk plate uses

Desk plates can be used in SO many other ways! If you don't have an official desk, or don't want to use your desk for it, consider these other options:
  • bulletin board posters,
  • basket labels,
  • add a magnet and hang on whiteboard,
  • refrigerator signs,
  • binder covers,
  • classroom poster,
  • or turn them into name plate tents

Free bilingual desk plate download

Leah says:

I love these desk plates! I have them on all of my tables! I also have laminated inside my homework folders of for all of my students. The students use them for reference when doing their homework.
