Ages ago, authors Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy reached out to me and generously offered a huge set of their materials to be given away to MommyMaestra readers. Sadly, the past year has been quite tumultuous and difficult for me and I just couldn't get to it, but they were kind enough to keep the materials set aside just for you. I am so thankful for their dedication to Latino families and their support of bilingual education.

  1. Hola! I am a homeschool mom trying to learn Spanish with my kids ages 5, 3, and 6 months. Do you happen to have any resources for learning "baby Spanish," like phrases commonly used during a child's day (You dropped your toy! Let's get you in the highchair! You're getting so big! Can I have a drink? Etc.) I really want to post some things by the highchair, in the bathroom, playroom, changing table etc. to help me practice and keep the kids learning. Thanks!

    1. Spanish is my second language, but I’ve spoken to my children in Spanish since birth and I found this website of a woman in Spain to be interesting because she is essentially doing the exact opposite as me. Anyway, she has lists of vocab that may be helpful to you!

Wordreference is also a great resource and Spanish Playground.

  24. I’ve been in denial! I’ve wanted so badly to rely on the library for access to books in Spanish but here in Mississippi it’s so hard to get them here! I’m slowly growing a home library of Spanish books and I’m looking forward to following up on these book titles and authors. Wondering if anyone had a poetry recommendation? I’m thinking of starting a poetry tea time in Spanish next school year with my kiddos.

    1. How wonderful what you are doing.
Isabel Campoy has a beautiful poetry anthology POESIA ERES TU which has an accompanying CD.
The anthology of my poetry TODO ES CANCION also has a CD with the poetry turned into songs.
Some of my poetry is presented in ABC books, GATHERING THE SUN a bilingual poetry alphabet honoring the farm workers.
ABECEDARIO DE LOS ANIMALES with two poems for each letter, one about an animal the other about the letter itself, playing with its form and sound
CORAL Y ESPUMA abecedario del mar. A poem related to the ocean for each letter in the alphabet.
All of them have CDs with the poems turned into songs by Suni Paz.

  31. I am a licensed child care provider. My first language is Spanish, but with years, and while trying to learn & strnghten my English; I stopped speaking Spanish in my facility and with my 3 daughters. My daughters attend a Dual-Language Program in our city’s district. Now I have become passionate about teaching my students more Spanish and converting my in-home center into a Dual-Language Program as well. These books will be an excellent resource for our program.

  32. "Leave a comment on this post telling me if you are a teacher or parent of bilingual children!" I'm not a teacher and I don't believe I am a parent of bilingual children.

  33. I was delighted to read your comments and wish you all success with your efforts on behalf of your students and your children. All children deserve to have their family language preserved and developed in order to be able to communicate with extended family, to get to truly know their culture... and all children deserve the gift of languages, a second, a third... languages will open many doors to a wider world and contribute to develop appreciation for all human beings. May you enjoy the process and remain faithful to it, even when at times it may be hard or frustrating. It was not easy for me to help my four children become bilingual, but now, having two languages has been one of the greatest assets in their lives, both personally and professionally. All best wishes,

  34. I'm a teaching assistant for an afterschool literacy program that welcomes homeschoolers for fun, games, and reading for about 30 children. We do wonderful things with just a small budget, but our emphasis is on reading so we get books at a local second-hand store and from library discards. They're in good condition and our little library is growing! We have asked parents and volunteers to translate our books, but finding bilingual picture books has proved a difficult task. I am so glad to have found this great online resource for advice on which books we should look for. Please keep this up! We need you!
