Disney's Rango

This past weekend we took the kids to see Rango. I laughed almost non-stop. The 2D effects were amazing and I much prefer this to 3D, which is frustrating for the kids who usually have a hard time with the glasses and wind up abandoning them half way through.

And while I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would love to see it again, I wish that I had read mi amiga, Liz's, review first. It was not a movie for little kids (mine are 4 and 6), but better suited for teenagers and adults. I am a little surprised that it was rated PG. I think PG-13 would fit this movie best because there was a LOT of adult humor and a LOT of language that I'd rather my kids not learn yet. It also had some scary scenes towards the end (mis niños were not fans of la cascabel!) that many younger children would prefer to do without. That said, my four-year-old absolutely loved Rango's character and spent most of the next few days imitating him. (Seriously, how could Depp be anything but brilliant?)

If you haven't seen it yet, or if you don't know much about it, the movie is basically a western with animals as the main characters. The storyline is cute (and predictable), and follows the story of Rango, a thespian chameleon who gets lost in the desert. But the best part - I thought - was the amount of Spanish language and culture that was sprinkled throughout the movie. My favorite characters were the mariachi burrowing owls and the wise old armadillo (Alfred Molina). Like I said, the movie is rich with southwest flavor, humor, and culture.

Here is a clip to give you a taste of the movie...
